Hypothetical example for Redline Excavating, a small site work contractor.

Redline Excavating is hiring an Equipment Operator for site prep and grading (Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. start). You'll run an excavator and skid steer, maintain machines and work with the ground crew. A CDL is preferred.

Notice what makes it work: real hours, the actual tools, who they report to, and one honest reason to want the job. That’s the difference between a blank template and a job description that gets the right applicants.

Requirements, training and licenses

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says operators often need a CDL to haul equipment to jobsites, a few states have special licenses for backhoes, loaders and bulldozers, and some states require a crane license for pile driver operators.

Training: Moderate-term on-the-job training or a 3 to 4 year apprenticeship.
